For BJP 2012 I will be making twelve Christmas ornaments. The basic shape is from a pattern by Paula Adams to which I will be changing color placement/embellishment. The ornament measures approximately 3" in length. I did have trouble identifying the step-up when it fell at a decrease. Guess the next ornament will have to address that issue. (beads - Delica, 3mm AB crystals)

Using matte finish, opaque beads sure makes taking a photograph so much easier! But, for the tree, it has to be silver lined beads. This panel isn't quite finished in that it needs decorative edges, but for now it will have to wait.

Raspberry Fizz with a Slice of Lime -

For this piece I experimented with standing columns of beads ranging in height from 3 to 7 beads tall.

Quake

Lest we forget, this piece was done with thoughts of New Zealand and Japan. The reddish beads are actually a deep brown but I couldn't get the color to photograph properly. My experiment on this one is the different heights. The "blue water" is at a lower level than the "earth". For the earth, I beaded the two sections separately and then mounted them with some extra material to build up the original surface.

Not sure when I will be adding (or beading) any more pages. Since last I wrote we unexpectedly moved. We had been casually looking around for a piece of waterfront property with the idea that at some time in the future we would once again build a new home. But then ..... we found the perfect place. We are now in our new home and all the boxes are unpacked, but one of these days we will be heading back to New England for the summer.

March - bead journal project page.Not good ----- I like the colors and I like the design but, I sure don't like them together. Seems with such a severe design the colors should not be so playful and, conversely, with playful colors it should not be such a severe design. Of course I didn't realize this until I was finished and I had it mounted on its square. For me, these colors need polka dots, ruffles, spirals, etc.; the design worked with a very deep colored circle against a mid toned ground, with a bundle of gold bars banded in red could be very dramatic. Oh well.

For February I did two sections of flat peyote and then they were attached to the backing before adding the surrounding beads. When it came time to do the edge stitches for the peyote sections, I just wove a couple more rows in turquoise so those areas wrapped over the edge.

My sister, Shel, wanted a throw with a beach feel to it. Approximately 50 different shades of whites, ivories, tans and aquas were used - mostly all wool, including merino, alpaca, cashmere and a bit of acrylic.

As a respite from working on the throw, I've managed to knit a couple of scarves. The fibers in the green scarf are merino wool, alpaca, acrylic, rayon and cotton.

2011 starts a new year in the bead journal project, this being my 4th. I've decided to continue on with the Circle and Line Series but plan to add dimensional elements or bead off the edge. The format is 3"x3" and the beads are delica.

For November, I've used the rich gold of the season. The central core beads are triangles with hex cut gold for the outer bead.

These hex beads are the tiniest little things.

Stone Page No. 7 - the featured "stones" are two pieces of beach glass - most probably beer bottle glass. For this piece I wired the glass in place with 24 ga. brass wire.

Owning lots of fingering weight yarn, what to do with it ---- give it away, continue to store it, or come up with a project to use some of it. In the end, I sorted the yarn into two piles, one pile of clear colors and the other of greyed colors. I'm now working on a shawl/throw (depends on how much yarn I have as to whether it will be a shawl or throw). To the grey pile I added a ball of handdyed mohair in a deep blue/purple color combination.

Project details - fingering weight yarn; size 9 needles; feather and fan stitch pattern; 312 stitches (allows for 3-stitch borders).

Sea Turtles

The other day we went to the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation center on Jekyll Island. It is an amazing facility comprised of two buildings that are open to the public. In the first building there is a big plate glass window which allows visitors to watch operations taking place in the surgery. During our visit the surgeon was working on a turtle's shell.

These pictures are from the second building. The biggest of the sea turtles (the largest we saw was 280 lbs) have tanks to themselves. Each tank has name plates and a booklet giving information as to why the turtle is in rehab, weight, app. age and where the turtle was rescued.

This little guy could not have weighed a pound. He was so tiny.

A Look Back

A few weeks ago I had the good fortune of finding Elizabeth Barton's blog "Art and Quilts, Cogitations Thereon" http://www.elizabethbarton.blogspot.com/ Her posting of January 22nd really got me wondering if there was any sort of common theme in my work.

During my high school years (the 1960's), I had a wonderful art teacher, Ruth Sparks, and my favorite technique at the time was drawing with pen and ink --- but, it wasn't line drawing, it was dots -- thousands of tiny little dots (considering what I do now, no surprise there) in different colored inks that made up the painting. Unfortunately, I no longer have any of them.

During the 1970's I took up needlepoint and did lots of projects but my favorite was this piece of color blending.

And then the 1980's arrived and Kaffe Fassett's influence on the knitting world. For this sweater I used 56 different colors of mohair yarn. If you look closely you will see a gold stitch that I knitted in the night Brian Boitano won his Olympic gold medal in figure skating.

And then this sweater in which I changed the method of adding color. One thread remaining the same throughout the sweater and then I worked a color change on every row with the second thread (45 colors used).

And on to the 90's when I took up quilting. For this piece I dyed a series of yellows and oranges which I then cut up into one inch squares and reassembled.

I also took my first tentative steps into the world of beading. This is a loom woven piece.

After years of working with one inch squares (still my favorite) I did move up to two inch squares. I worked on many styles of quilts but my personal favorites had color blending.

The 2000's saw Robin Atkins http://www.beadlust.blogspot.com/ enter my life with the start of the Bead Journal Project. I joined in to learn bead embroidery and here is one of my first attempts at this new technique.

The 2010's finds me still blending colors.

Whether I'm knitting, quilting or beading - apparently it isn't the medium that matters, but putting color against color is what I find fascinating and have spent my life doing. It all seems so obvious now. Thank you Elizabeth Barton.

It all starts out so innocently. Three years ago I wanted to learn how to do bead embroidery so I signed on with Robin's original bead journal project, which in turn led to having a blog. This is my blog post number 100.

And so it goes - my sister and I had been discussing how cupcakes are all the rage including knitted ones. A young gal in my sister's office loves red velvet cake so what could be more appropriate than knitting her a red velvet cake cupcake for Valentine's Day.

I couldn't very well send Brittany a cupcake without making something for my sister, so with a little computer research I found a pattern for a petit four.

Hmm, now that the petit four is in the mail, I wanted one, or two ....

As a consequence of all this "baking", I really slowed down with my beading. Below is one page done. The center piece is an agate slice that my mom bought many, many years ago. I've no idea what she planned on doing with it, but it fit into my plans perfectly.

The final photograph is of my February spiral. The bead color is a very pale pink and the spiral is quite two-sided rather than round.

The Goddess of Bead Embroidery was not at all pleased with my plans for the year. I went to bed on January 1st knowing how I wanted to proceed with my creative endeavors for the next twelve months. Everything was set and I was walking a golden path, all neat and orderly.

When I awoke on January 2nd I discovered the GBE had torn up my path, throwing down boulders in my way, forcing an entirely new direction for year.

January 2010

Needing a quicker project for this third year of the Bead Journal Project, I decided to experiment with spirals. All the spirals will measure 4" long before the drop bead at the end. But then, the best laid plans don't always work out. Below are photos of the new January "page" for BJP 2010.

This piece measures 3" square (with rounded corners) and is mounted on a piece of 5" stiffened felt. Depending on how many of these pages I make (there will be more than the needed 12), I may remount it. I stitched the mounting in such a way that it can easily be taken apart without affecting the beadwork. The center area is a beach rock from Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Between the sea and the sand, the rock has been tumbled completely smooth. The central area is about 1/2" in depth.

The final "page" is complete. This memory ornament is in honor of my late mother-in-law. The lace was taken from the underdress to her wedding gown. When it actually came time to cut into the dress, just couldn't do it. The gown itself is nothing but lace and therefore had a silk and lace underdress. Some of the lace on this part of the gown was damaged so that is where I cut into it. The pin was from her childhood.

For this knitting challenge, the pond out back provided inspiration. I am using seven colors - one variegated, three greens and three blues. The knitted piece has a nice murky look to it the way the water does.

A knitted sunrise ---- the yarn for this hat is from Harrisville Design in Harrisville, NH. Forty-four color changes resulted in eighty-eight ends that needed working in. Two hours of watching American Idol saw the job done.

Here is a photo of how the light looks shining into the house through the front windows and door. During the holiday season I had hung 12 Swarovski crystal snowflakes/stars from the dining room chandelier. It was like living with a disco ball turning every time the heat kicked on. Finally finished this wall quilt that I started last summer. The close up shows the "big" quilt stitches. They may be big but they sure take awhile to stitch. The quilt measures 36x36. For a closer look, click on the image to enlarge it.
